Winter

The silence grew, like the fear inside me,
like the vine outside my window,
or the weeds in the garden.
My heart pounded in my chest,
like a horse upon a canter.

I knew the fear that was there,
like I knew the silence, in and out.
As my heart raced within,
I felt you beside me,
heard your even breath.

My fingers, numb with cold,
My nose, red in the white snow,
Your eyes, dark in the ice,
Your lips, the only warmth found,
in the coldness of my world.
